Matt was born and raised in Dalton. Upon graduating from Dalton High School, he attended Auburn University, where he graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He came back to Dalton to run a family business, which he later sold in 2001. At that point, Matt began a career in financial planning, becoming a partner in Browne, Draper and Land in 2007. In September of 2022, Matt started his own firm, Stern Investments, which he operates with his long time assistant, Denise Ambrose.
They focus on individual financial management, retirement planning, and 401(k) administration. During that same time, Matt also has enjoyed a 32 year career in coaching and mentoring the youth of Northwest Georgia. In 2019, Matt was named the Atlanta Falcons High School Coach of the Year, as well as the 2019 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year. In 2020, he was also named by USA Football as one of the Top 20 Most Influential High School Coaches in America.
Matt met his wife Amy while at Auburn and they have been married 30 years. They have three daughters and a son. Bowen graduated from Auburn and is a high school english teacher and currently resides in Colorado Springs with her husband Andrew who is a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. McCord also graduated from Auburn in Event Managment, and is engaged to Kris. They will be married in April of 2025. Banks will attend Auburn in the fall majoring in Building Science. Cross is a sophomore at Calhoun High School. They are active members at The River Community Church and have been involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes for over 30 years.
